the following contains spoilers.
WHAT I WAS EXPECTING
Space explorers find aliens, aliens try and kills space explores. Space explorers return to the science center on earth but one of the creatures is living inside one of the astronauts and rips through his chest. Astronauts and scientists have to stop the Aliens from reproducing, breaking out of the science center, and infecting earth. They must not be entirely successful because many sequels follow.

REACTIONS
The slow-paced open sequence where the camera moved through the ship reminded me of Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey. Since the film is all about mood and environment it made sense to introduce the setting before even the characters. The ship's control system, Mother, never speaks but I like to imagine that she's related to Hal.
I was a little surprised that Signorey Weaver was in this film. For some reason I though she was only in the sequel.
The prediction I was most wrong about was that any part of the story took place on earth. The fact that most of the story takes place in the confined setting of the ship is what make it work so well as a thriller. The film was very tense at times, even if a lot of the scares were just jump scenes caused by the appearance of the ship's cat.
The chest-bursting scene was the only scene I'd heard about before and seen pictures of so I was waiting for it the whole time. I found it funny when the little guy zipped across the floor like a wind-up car.
This was a very slimy film. Even the robots were slimy.
I found it hard to believe the reactions that the crew had to what was going on around them, or rather, they're lack of reaction. These guys have just discovered extraterrestrial beings, beings that are killing everyone on board, and yet everyone seemed merely anxious instead of completely freaked out. I also couldn't figure out how the alien could grow so much larger after every time it ate someone. It can't be getting nearly enough nutrients to double it's size like that. Why this, of all thing, tripped my suspension of disbelief I have no idea.
REFERENCES
I just noticed that the Pizza Planet scene in the first Toy Story has several references to Alien. The most shocking has to be the "WHACK-A-ALIEN" arcade game.
And is often-times embarrassed to be seen with her in public |
